Luther wrote that “pride is the mother of all heresies, indeed as both sacred and profane history testifies, it is the source of all sin and ruin.” [Luther, Lectures on Galatians, LW 27:97; Augustine, Reply to Faustus 22. 22]
"Moses once told the Israelites that God would raise up a prophet like him for them and that he was to be listened to. That day arrived for the prophet to come. He was gentle and humble in heart. When he was insulted he did not retaliate. When he suffered he made no threats." http://www.nnyredemption.com/podcast/pride/
"Imagine life without the Gospel. For many people, even for many people that we know, this is their reality. What would such a life be like? How would we live, think, be? Without the Gospel we have only the law, only demands, rules, a raging conscience which is devouring us or which is caged and ignored. Without the Gospel there is no Jesus on the cross, no forgiveness of sin by His blood, no comfort in His Word. What is the result of such a void?
The answer is two-fold: pride or despair. A Pharisee or a Judas. Without the Gospel we are flung toward pride on the one hand, and despair on the other. Our Lutheran Confessions give us this insight:" https://www.hope-aurora.org/pages/NewWithouttheGospel
On commenting about Romans 7 Luther wrote:
"That “God is justified in His words” (Ps. 51:4 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ) means that He is made just and true in His words or that His words are made just and true. And this takes place in believing them, accepting them, and holding them as true and just. The only thing that can resist this justification is pride of the human heart through unbelief. For this pride does not justify but condemns and judges. Therefore it does not believe His words, since it does not regard them as true." [LW 25:210]
The sin of pride refuses the forgiveness of Christ. That forgiveness that can only come from Jesus' death on the cross. None of our efforts can achieve what is necessary to receive eternal life with God since we are tainted with sin and sin cannot be forgiven apart from Jesus' blood, the same blood of that man who died on the cross for us; for the forgiveness of the sin of the world.
Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin Acts 13:38-39
