Do you rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher or do you just put the dishes in and why?

I have a dishwasher that doesn't work and I have not used for years. I simply fill a basin with hot water mixed with salt and this is fine for getting most dishes clean. Sometimes I add lemon. I let them soak, and time does most of the work until they are ready for quick rub down and rinse and to the dish-rack.

No, I don't rinse my dishes. Sometimes it's best to have some food particles to swish around inside the dishwasher for better cleaning.
