Biden is working hard to buy more votes. Student loans getting paid off doesn't mean free money, it's just that someone else is going to be paying off those loans, you, me, the waitress with 3 kids, the truck drivers who don't have degrees. The stats are showing that those who will benefit from this the most are the ones who will be making more money from their degrees. Does that even make sense?

In addition to the 500 billion dollar cost to the taxpaying public of this move, it's grossly unfair to 1) all those who honored their free choice to borrow towards their education and then suffered and struggled for years to pay the loans back but did so, as well as 2) those who decided to forego a college education and the careers that require a degree because they could not afford it.

It will be interesting to see which group(s) are the most strongly motivated to vote a certain way this November in response to this move by the current occupant of the White House.

I can tell you that my daughter and her friends (all in their 20s) all voted for Biden because he said he was going to pay their student loans. They'll probably continue to vote Democrat to get more freebies because apparently that's what life is all about. I purposely had my daughter get a student loan so that she could learn financial responsibility and now the government has declared it to not be needed. Thanks Biden.

Hmm. I wonder if that fact suggests that these people who are already Democrat-inclined will feel vindicated and will continue to vote that way, WHILE people in the other categories, including many whom we may presume to have had no affiliation previously or were independents will now feel cheated by the administration and so will respond by turning against that party's candidates for federal office??

Let your disapproval of the student loan payoffs be known to your congressmen. Pre drafted and auto send comment letter to your federal rep and senators here (you can revise the message before sending): You Will Have to Pay for This

I really don't understand why the government didn't get to the core of the issue if they truly cared about people being in debt? There are many other things that they could have done that would have been "fair".

Yep, nothing says pandering to your base like expecting the lowest paid to subsidise the choices made by the not-quite-highest paid. Yeah, there's a $250,000 earnings cap for a couple. I'm sure the waitress married to the janitor appreciates their tax money not being handed out to the exceptionally rich like candy.

Yep, more and more people are expected to take responsibility for things other people did, while being absolved of responsibility for the things they did.

Best thing would have been that the government had never gotten into the student loan business in the first place.

Here is some good commentary (2 minutes) on the student loan payoff fiasco.

1. It will not happen. They know that. There's no money for it, it won't pass either House.

2. This will cause Republicans to scream and Democrats can say "See, stupid, ignorant Republicans hate education and fear college grads." Might be working.

3. This is pandering to the base of the Democrat Party.... because a lot of Democrats with degrees in Gender Studies are fading from their grasp, and when this promise (TOO) ceases to be realize, they'll blame the Republicans and hopefully keep the unemployed Gender Studies grads in their pocket. It's worked well in the past.

Not that I'm cynical or anything like that.

My friend says his mortgage identifies as a student loan. I wonder if he will get $10,000 off.

I thought Biden made an executive order for it, bypassing Congress? Is that even legal?

Sometimes I wonder if what is legal even matters any more. It reminds me of a quote I saw years ago that said "the illegal we can do today, the unconstitutional takes a bit longer"?
