As recounted by Leonard Susskind in his "The Black Hole War - My Battle With Stephen Hawking To Make The World Safe For Quantum Mecahnics," Dr. Hawking was wrong about what happens to information that is sucked into a black hole. It took something like 30 years to prove him wrong, and the science of black holes was greatly advanced in the process.
