I don't like corned beef (WAY too salty for MY taste.... and I understand the Irish have never heard of it, lol). I don't like Guniness beer (Harp is good - it's made by the same Irish company but MUCH better).....

Not having a drop of Irish in me, my "celebration" is limited to wearing something green IF I happen to think of that when I'm getting dressed (which rarely happens). But hey, don't let me rain on anyone's parade! I'm all in favor of cultural celebrations! When is the day when tens of millions of Americans celebrate GERMAN heritage? DANISH heritage?

What do you mean the Irish never heard of corned beef??? It's not a traditional meal because it used to be very costly. That's why when the people came to America and found they could eat it here without it being so expensive, it became associated with the Irish. But corned beef has been around Ireland since at least the 12 century.

They actually have them, brother, and they are a good time, too, just not as publicized as St. Patrick's Day because of what took place then.
Btw, Everybody's Irish on Saint Patty's Day! :=D:

(In reply to Josiah, post#20, I forgot to re-quote)

The GERMANS celebrate BEER on Oktoberfest.... but it's by no means that near national holiday in the USA that St. Patty's Day is.....

And while everyone thinks the Danes are nice these days (the whole Viking thing has been forgiven), no one celebrates anything about Denmark or the Danes (some of the nicest people on the planet, if I do say so myself and I just did). Hey we all could eat Aebleskiver on Danish Day (they do in Solvang, CA and in Blair Nebraska)

Some tin whistle (penny whistle) music to help get you in the mood! I'm going to get mine out today to practice since it's been 6 months!

Interesting
Patrick was a 5th-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Much of what is known about Saint Patrick comes from the Declaration, which was allegedly written by Patrick himself. It is believed that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a deacon and his grandfather was a priest in the Christian church. According to the Declaration, at the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland.[13] It says that he spent six years there working as a shepherd and that during this time he "found God". The Declaration says that God told Patrick to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home. After making his way home, Patrick went on to become a priest.
According to tradition, Patrick returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. The Declaration says that he spent many years evangelising in the northern half of Ireland and converted "thousands". Patrick's efforts against the druids were eventually turned into an allegory in which he drove "snakes" out of Ireland (Ireland never had any snakes).
Tradition holds that he died on 17 March and was buried at Downpatrick. Over the following centuries, many legends grew up around Patrick and he became Ireland's foremost saint.

Is there any evidence that Patrick was a Catholic (big "C")? He MIGHT be regarded as Irish (as an immigrant) but was he Catholic?

An Irish blessing:

May the blessing of God's soft rain be on you,
Falling gently on your head, refreshing your soul
With the sweetness of little flowers newly blooming.
May the strength of the winds of Heaven bless you,
Carrying the rain to wash your spirit clean
Sparkling after in the sunlight.
May the blessing of God's earth be on you,
And as you walk the roads,
May you always have a kind word
for those you meet.

He's a saint in the Catholic canon of saints. He was instructed in the faith under the bishops in the territory that later became England. He has been known as a Catholic saint for hundreds of years. He was born and died long before the introduction of the formal process of canonisation of saints. That process came into beinng in the 13th century. Saint Patrick lived in the latter half of the 5th century. He has never been formally canonised, but that is no surprise, nor have the apostles and many of the ancient martyrs been formally canonised because their sainthood was already well established before the 13th century.

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. But for all of his prevalence in culture, namely the holiday held on the day of his death that bears his name, his life remains somewhat of a mystery. Many of the stories traditionally associated with St. Patrick, including the famous account of his banishing all the snakes from Ireland, are false, the products of hundreds of years of exaggerated storytelling.(source)

I always liked the Irish toast that says may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows. Also has anyone kissed the blarney stone?

I've never been to Ireland to kiss it, I hear it is somewhat difficult to reach.

My in-laws have all kissed it but they did comment that it was weird kissing something where all those other lips have been.
