Someone forgot to tell the guys having a business conference in the meeting room next door to us that First Nations conferences WILL involve drumming and chanting. They were mad :D

That reminded me of an interesting booking mixup from some years ago. It was at a community fair where they had all sorts of groups showing what they were about. Some genius managed to put the group that kept things like mice and hamsters as pets, next to the people who bred snakes. The snake people complained and asked to be moved but were told it was too late to change anything. Then the mouse people complained alongside them, someone involved in organising it had a flash of common sense, and they were separated.

You wonder what kind of genius thought it was a good idea to put the group that encouraged handling of rodent-eaters next to the group that encouraged handling of rodents.

Got some electrical tidying up done. An old ungrounded cable that fed my chest freezer is now replaced with nice grounded cable. I had to drill and tap a hole for a grounding screw in the metal back box because whoever put it in had cemented it into place and filled all the unused holes with cement. The old cable is coiled up in my box of dead cable that I've pulled out.

Then for the sake of tidiness I took out the cable that fed the drier socket that our former tenant used to use. We figured we're never going to use it, so there's no point having it there and no point taking up two bays in the breaker panel to feed it. So now the socket is gone, the cable is coiled up in my pile of spare cable that might be reused (it's 12-3 if not 10-3 with ground, so a good piece of cable) and the breaker switch is in my spares box.

Enjoying my press-board side table from Wal-Mart. I was looking for an outdoor table for my little patio space and found nothing but cheap junk that was more than a $20 Sauder table. Doesn't take much to make me happy :D

A little more electrical work today. After much contemplating I figured a good way to get a new cable into the last room in the basement that doesn't have new grounded cable feeding the lighting. There is a circuit that contains nothing more than one socket in the dining room and one light in the basement. Now it only contains the one socket - the light is dead. I had planned to replace the light but didn't have the parts I need, and didn't feel like driving across town to the only hardware store that might be open today. So I ran a new cable, taped the ends to make it safe, and figured I'll finish the job in due course. Then I can also replace the nasty piece of old cable and rejig the wiring so that another socket in the dining room is on the same circuit - at present it's tapped into a circuit that feeds two outlets in the basement.

What I want to do is create two parallel circuits that feed around the basement, so that anywhere I'm working I've got sockets on two different circuits available. I can't see any situation where I'd want to be drawing a lot of current in multiple rooms at once, but it's easy to see why I might want a power tool and the shop vac at the same time. If I've got multiple outlets around the basement I can free up an extension cord, which will have the added benefit that I won't have a cord coiled up on the floor. For good measure along the way I can put in ground fault protection - the existing sockets were put in long before that sort of thing was a requirement but since they are underground they should really have that protection. It should be pretty easy to make it all happen, just need to run a load of new cable to actually make it happen.

Once the dining room sockets are sorted out I'll have a few more pieces of old cable to throw in my box of scrap. It will also mean I'll be down to only three circuits that contain old cable, which is nice.

Had another false start to what should have been a really simple wiring job, this time because I forgot what I had (or, to be more specific, what I didn't have) in my supplies box. I installed the new light (new back box, light holder, new cable, the full works) and then realised that the one thing I needed but didn't have was..... the switch to control the light. The old light had a pull switch on it, which was really useful because it meant you had to pick your way through the dark to find the light.

So today we were in town, and I picked up a handful of switches. They are so cheap I'd rather not be in a place where I need a cheap part and don't have one. As I was looking for some other stuff at the hardware store I also noticed that my back box wasn't big enough for the job. It works, but isn't quite big enough for the job as far as the electrical code is concerned. So I bought a slightly bigger back box which is big enough. And now that piece of work is finally done. For good measure I took the piece of dead cable out and threw it in my box of dead cable.

Another walk in the woods. Same loop as last time, a little over six miles in all. Now I'm getting back into the swing of it I'm going to start doing my other loop up the side of the mountain. I need to look at the map to see if there's a convenient way to join the two loops together - I could do it with a bit of walking on the dirt roads but I'd rathe avoid that. Hopefully the wet and boggy patches will dry out soon - there's quite a nice trail I recently found but it's not particularly well marked and a few sections are very wet and muddy.

I am writing posts on ANZAC day morning as the radio tells me all about our politicians making speeches while pretending to suspend their electioneering on ANZAC day.

I'm running my laptop again. It had a new games graphics driver. I installed it. 511 MB, rather large. Now I am writing this post with the laptop. I have my mini PC running on the bigger screen and it is showing me a podcast that I watch fairly regularly.
