Went for a walk and the humidity drained me so I haven't started doing things I need to get done yet. It's almost 10AM and I feel lazy. Maybe I shouldn't be walking outside until it cools off in autumn?

Humidity can be a real kicker when walking in it. I think the staff at my local park think I'm bonkers, given how often I go for a walk even when it is hot and sticky. It can be pretty grim to get back and have my entire shirt soaked with sweat, but it does make the air conditioning in the car feel really nice.

For me the worst part about everything being hot and humid is that I can only physically carry so much water, and once it's gone it's gone. Every once in a while I think about getting a portable water purifier so I can refill my bottles from a stream.

Not a productive day today. Got some more cellulose lifted, a few boxes shifted up into the attic etc. Now I've got two bags that are nearly full of cellulose. Once they are full I'll take them outside. It's a bit of a pain because when I empty the trash can into a bag I need a fresh bag or I end up with cellulose everywhere, then I empty the bag into another bag. But that still leaves more space, but not enough for another load from the trash can. So unless there's enough material that I can lift it with my scoop I end up with a growing collection of nearly-full bags. Then I lift another piece of floor and fill them all quickly.

I'm wondering if I can get away without pulling down the entire ceiling. Some of it needs to come down because it's suffered water damage and I don't want to go to all this trouble and not fix the damage. It may be that I can pin some shims across the ceiling joists and save myself the mess and disruption of pulling the whole lot down.

And just as an added surprise, when I went out to sit on the porch for a break I noticed a nice fresh mud wasp nest stuck to one of the downstairs windows. Thankfully I had a couple of old laths on hand to break it up. It wasn't huge, it looked like there were maybe 3-4 grubs in there, but now they are all broken up and aren't going to get to sting anything.

I'm doing a bunch of things around the house and every time my daughter's guinea pig hears me she goes "want! want! want!" She has different sounds for different things and figured out that if she says want that means she's hungry :D

She's the same pig that starting going "woof woof woof" when her mom died and she would listen to the neighbor's dogs outside. She still calls for her mom and it comes out like a purr as she searches the cage. She does that when we put her back in the cage after holding her and she hopes her mom will be waiting for her. So sad.

My favorite local brewery had a new beer they recently tapped so among doing some errands I may have accidentally stopped by to sample it. It was good, but not their best beer. So it seemed rude not to have a glass of my favorite beer from their list.

Now sitting in my recliner with a tummy full of dinner and a couple of beers, feeling pretty good :)

Haha, only two beers. Not only was it just two beers, but they were good beers - the kind of beer to sip rather than chug. It takes more than that to create work for the staff here :)

I had planned to pull down some more wall in a room under demolition. Instead I ended up working in the attic. I don't even remember what took me up to the attic but I decided it was time to fill a few of the gaps in the slates. I've used a lot of expanding foam around the windows (they are 100 years old, with a few gaps around them) already but today I decided to focus on air gaps through the slates I could see, and address other window issues.

I ended up using most of a tube of sealant and much of a can of foam. Some of it was possibly overkill but when I found a gap I wanted to make sure that nothing was coming in through the gap. Since my first round of spraying foam the number of bugs in the attic has dropped massively, hopefully a few more rounds of gap hunting will see a total lack of bugs.

Given how hot and sweaty and generally yucky I got working in the attic it was surprising to sit on the back porch for a bit and see just how cool the air was.

I'll be out walking later today. Debating whether to go for a regular walk, a long walk, or aim for Fitbit's Canyon badge (400 floors in a day). It would take a bit of doing, I reckon I'd need 7-8 hours to take in the route that would give me that much climbing. I may just settle for a mere 250 floors or so. My wife is out with friends for much of the day so I've got time on my hands :)

Take advantage of that time then :) Who knows when the weather will be nice again to do this!

My legs feel like they want to hibernate for a while now. I chalked up three new Fitbit badges today.

First was Astronaut (28,000 lifetime floors)
Then came Canyon (400 floors in a day)
Finally I got Cleats (40,000 steps in a day).

I may not be doing much walking tomorrow.

It's a day of rest anyway and you deserve it! Well done!

Two things were a surprise following my walk. Firstly I expected to sleep like a rock and had quite a disturbed sleep last night. Secondly I didn't expect my legs to work very well today but they are mostly functional. Don't know that I feel like another long walk in the woods, but they are mostly operational.

I did my usual walk around town with my wife. It's got a few gently rolling hills, and we went round a little slower than normal because my legs ache a little on the hills.

Yesterday's figures indicated I burned something like 5700 calories during the day. That includes what Fitbit guesses at my base metabolism, but that's way beyond anything I've seen in ages. Admittedly 4000 feet of climbing in a day is more than I've done in many years but the number was still surprising.

I'm seriously contemplating whether 5000 feet in a day (i.e. 500 floors) is something I want to attempt. Part of me wants to see if I can actually do it, but the thought of going back and forth over the mountain four times seems pretty heavy duty. I figure I'd need something like 9 hours to do it, which also assumes that I don't slow down too much towards the end. If I do attempt it and succeed, the next question is whether I want to go for a triple lap, that would put me at something like 36 miles for the day with 7200 feet of climbing. It would land me a bunch more badges but I'd be looking at hiking for probably 14 hours straight to do that, so I'd have to seriously consider options to take on food and water. I'd also need to consider issues of daylight, I really don't want to be descending a rocky trail in the failing light. Since it would be about the climbing, maybe I'd ask my wife to meet me at the top after my final ascent - that would save me a clear hour (or more, given my legs would be tired by then).
