Want to come and do mine when you're finished?

Interesting quirk this morning. I went to check the oil tanks and found they weren't even. Not even close. So I called my heating man and it turned out there was a blockage in one of the tanks. He used some kind of pump to clear stuff out, and now the two tanks are level again. Which is nice. I hope they stay that way because it's going to be expensive when it's time to replace them.

While he was here he gave me a couple of pointers regarding some plumbing work I can do myself. It's handy having him around - he's happy to give me pointers because he has enough work that he doesn't need every little piece of fiddling that I want to do, and also because if I get out of my depth he's the guy I'll call.

I just got done taking out a couple of lengths of old pipe. They bothered me for a while because I couldn't figure out what they were connected to, and as far as I could make out they weren't. When I traced further it looks like they are a relic of former water pipes. One of them was really in the way - it worked its way across one of the basement rooms, then went into a double adapter and looped back. Because of the way it looped it was hard to work around, so I straightened the adapters and put some torquey on it with a big pipe wrench to undo it from the next connector up. It was sufficiently old that the metal snapped before the threads loosened. So now as well as my box of old wiring I've ripped out, I'm starting another box of old plumbing I've removed. Some of the cast iron pipe is perfect for making pipe clamps for larger woodworking projects, but much of it will end up in the trash. A local guy collects scrap metal and sells it for a charity my church supports, so he'll be quite pleased with me when all this is done.

Surprising to see just what effect filling that single gap had. One room that I've pretty much abandoned to the cold (there's no heater in there, and it's somewhere down the list for getting rooms finished) has been dropping as low as 46 degrees after a cold night just lately. When I turned in last night it was 52 and this morning it was still 50.

Hard to get objective measurements from the immediately affected area because I only have so many thermometers to work with, but initial indications are good. I think I may have nailed the last of the drafts in that area.

Today has been really busy. The internet was down part of the day at work yesterday and this morning, but was back up this afternoon. Hope it stays that way. Last week we were having problems with our phone system at work for a whole day

There was a fatal wreck on the highway so I was detoured to the back roads... another bad wreck there and detoured from the detour. Finally made it to work and when I left I hit a deer and swerved around (thankfully no on was close enough near me to get in a bigger wreck, my hood however is wrecked. It may have been avoided if I could see but through the drizzle of rain and the fog with someone having their brights on me making me blind, im sure with they would have dimmed them I would have spotted the deer and stopped and let him pass. Bad day!

I'm glad YOU are okay!! Those things happen and you think you can avoid them but those deer get really stupid :(

Finishing off my coffee, preparing myself to drain part of our heating loop so I can add a radiator to it. It's supposed to get very cold soon, and I could really use the added radiator. But cutting into the heating loop is a bit of a daunting proposition, given that if anything goes wrong I'll have a section (albeit not a huge section) of the areas we are using that has no heating. I can shift to using electric heat but I'd really rather not go there. I just hope the isolation valves still, well, valve properly. If not I get to figure whether to just drain the entire loop to do the work and replace the valves, or kick the project into the long grass.

Got my piece of plumbing work done. It's always interesting wondering whether a very old valve will close properly, and if it does whether it will open again. Of course if it doesn't open I end up having to replace all sorts of things, which makes life interesting in ways I'd rather were boring.

Draining even that part of the system released more water than I expected. I'm glad I had a large bucket to catch it all, and even then I had to empty it twice. And of course when I cut the pipe the residual water poured out, which was interesting.

Now the job is done, so hopefully things will be a little warmer than before. The radiator I hooked in isn't going to get particularly warm - it's going to have whatever heat is left after the hot water has been through two existing radiators - but all it needs is to be warmer than now.
