Fiddling with a ruler and a compass. A friend of mine refused to accept that you could draw a circle and divide it into 12 equal pieces without using a protractor. The kind of trigonometry I can do in my head said I should be able to do it with a ruler and a compass, and I'd need the compass anyway to draw the circle.

A few minutes later and a ruler and compass produced 12 equal slices.
