I try to keep my kitchen clean but often fail during periods where I use it for something else and fail to clean up properly. I use the "clean as one goes" principle often but if I've co-opted the space for something else this can throw a spanner in the works, so to speak.
As for cleaning and dishes. I don't bother with a dishwasher. Waste of electricity and special detergents. Hot water mixed with salt and soaking time works fine. This applies to dishes as well as mopping the floor. I used to use detergents, and strong alcohol, but I've found that a cheap and reliable way is just to use hot water, salt, and time. So the process of cleaning dishes is the same process of cleaning dirty floors and counter-tops. Apply hot water infused with sodium, and wait. Then apply some pressure to get things clean. It works good because the hot water and sodium do the majority of the work.
I also use (when I remember) a "soaking glass" for utensils. If they were used to eat/spread a non-fat or low fat substance (such as ketchup), then soaking them is usually fine before drying and putting away. Fatty substances require hot water and salt.
