It should only be required if some aspect of the job requires it.

It's easy to see why someone working in nuclear physics might need a degree in nuclear physics. It's harder to see why someone with 20 years of corporate experience but no degree should be excluded from a job in favor of someone with no experience but a degree in something only marginally relevant.

I don't mean for doctors...

but in a lot of cases for a job posting, should a college degree be waived?

WalMart is eliminating a college degree requirement if there is proof of experience in the field.

It depends on the job in question. If experience in the field prepares a person adequately, then that's what matters to the employer and having a college degree may simply be a way of looking to hire the most capable person from a number of good applicants.

But as noted, there are positions that simply do require a college education and some of the loosening in that requirement, such as is happening with teachers, is being done only because there are not enough people going into that field at present.
