Rural area vs The city

Do you prefer to live in a rural area or the city, and why?

Rural. Prefer smaller communities to larger. Land is generally cheaper, and fewer people notice/complain if you plant a front yard garden. In some communities, people don't care if your lawn is beset by massive weeds and ugly as sin, but if they see fruits or veggies they make a stink.

The older I get the more remote I want to be.

I like having amenities on hand but increasingly prefer the extra space afforded by a more rural community.

Definitely rural. I'm sick of crowded areas. Once you see what it's like away from the crowds of people, life is happier Rats in a cage is a true concept of city living.

I must admit I did like being able to get around on foot for most of my day to day requirements when I lived in the city. It was really nice only putting 2000 miles a year on my car. The lack of space does get tedious. Unless you're incredibly wealthy having lots of space in the city isn't an option.

Plus, you don't have much privacy! With housing so close together you can hear through the walls. My daughter always complains about the neighbor upstairs who yells at his mom while on the phone.

Ha, I remember living next door to a couple with a teenage son who would shout at them a lot. Sometimes when the shouting matches paused for breath we were tempted to cheer and applaud.

Lived in the city all my life, but would love to be in a rural area, not in the sticks, but a small town where you can get out to the country fast, even by walking.

Rural will be defined by where one lives and what they experience in being 'rural'. Whereas 'city' is defined the same accross the board.

Many will move to 'rural' areas, but expect and try to maintain what they had in city life. That doesn't work and creates great strife with them and others.

I encourage a young man or young couple to move to the country. But, be willing to accept the differences. Be willing to give up much of what you had in the city. Don't try and bring the city with you to the country.

I say 'young' because if you're not young, you don't have the stamina or the health or the time to make it work.

I dare say, not many men willing to do that. And less women. But I encourage any to do that.

Seriously?

I left the city for a rural area in my mid-40s. I started a total home overhaul project (literally ripping apart just about everything and rebuilding it) when I wasn't far shy of 50.
