What in the world is a restore point, and how do I earn them?

when there's is a major update Windows will create a restore point itself in case something goes wrong with the update - if something does go wrong then windows will use the restore point to return your PC to the state it was in before it tried to do the update. A restore point is a kind of backup for the Windows operating system (it does not back up your data). I hope this helps.

Restore points are great to have if you get an infection on your computer. Malwarebytes is a great tool to have in conquering those infections but sometimes a restore point is also needed.

Do you back up your computer?

i never backup pc because it takes up a lot of space. also, i see that my old points are gone, the pc is set to save 1% (4.65GB) of points..so old points are replaced by new ones, no worries. just a small bit of piece of mind. its very stressful, trying to reset pc due to a major pc snafu.
