Did you get your Real ID if you live in the US?

The deadline has been extended to May 2023 so you still have time. If you ever plan on flying or going to any military base you'll need to have a Real ID.

My husband and I went to get ours this morning. We had been pre-verified for the past 3 years but wanted to wait to get it for when our current licenses expired. We tried looking online concerning it and my husband got an error message so we actually had to drive an hour to the closest location to get ours. He was worried because the name on his birth certificate is wrong...his mom messed up when he was born and never legally fixed it. We had a hard time getting his passport because of it but eventually got it taken care of. And he let that expire, so now we need to renew that!

My wife and I have passports so it's not really a problem where flights are concerned. I can't imagine needing to be on a military base any time soon.

Coincidentally my new passport literally arrived today so I’m good to go.
Ironically the last time we returned to the U.S. we didn’t even have to pull out our passports due to facial recognition. As we were walking up to the customs agent he was already viewing our profiles on his monitor and addressed us by name.

The deadline for getting a Real ID has been extended multiple times. I got mine back in January when I renewed my driver's license. Once enforced, you cannot take a domestic flght without it in my home state of Missouri.

You couldn't use a Passport instead?

Iowa was REAL ID compliant when we lived there. They were compliant early. So our last driver's license there was compliant. We moved to Texas 4 years ago and they are compliant too. If you drive and get your license renewed before the May 2023 deadline, you will have one. My research shows that all states are compliant. If you look at your driver's license, look for a goldish color circle with a white star in it. If you have that, you are compliant.

Now if you do not drive, look to see how you get an ID for identification purposes.

My state was one of the last ones to jump on the bandwagon for this. There are only about a dozen locations or so throughout the state that will actually give you the Real ID on the spot. I wish all of them would get up to date and be able to do it since places get crowded and a line down the street a half hour before the location even opens.

I think the idea of Real ID is that you need a form of ID that qualifies. If you don't have a passport you can get a driving license that is valid for Real ID purposes. Because, you know, a driving license isn't really proof of ID.

Gotta love the gubmint.

You can and I have a passport, but for those who don’t have a passport, eventually a real ID will be mandatory to fly domestically.

Right, our state is 100% compliant. It’s been almost ten years since I renewed my drivers license and I believe they required at least two approved forms of ID to qualify. Previously it was relatively easy to get a drivers license.
