In the case of Nazi Germany, they wanted more living space and access to raw materials without trade restrictions. Anyway, they could have just easily used the excuse, and they did, that they were saving the world from Communism, and Stalin, the monster he was, was a poster boy for evil.

Well, the excuses are neverending, but the motive for a lot of war is obvious.
