Polygamy was allowed in the Old Testament. It wasn't God's plan for man and woman though, yet it was allowed. There are sects that believe polygamy is still allowed. Do you think this is something that the United States will someday legalize?

I predict polygamy will be made legal by the US Supreme Court within 10 years. Legally, there is now NOT A LEG to stand on in denying such. I think that will be a much less passionate debate and will just sneak in, without anyone much caring. The historic definition is gone.... replaced by "if people love each other" - and by that definition, polygamy is just as acceptable as same gender marriage.

No I don't think they will. Whether they hold to religion or not, population is a major issue in the world. Unless disease, war or another disaster brings the population down I don't think they will. Geez, I sound morbid... :)

Everything is wide open at this point because of that definition and I agree that this country will sink deeper into sin and that morals such as they are will become even worse

I do not agree with polygamist sects. If you notice, most of the women are coerced into these relationships by cult leaders or others that would abuse Scripture to fulfill their own lust. Polyamory is a little bit different in that all parties are more likely to be agreeing with the relationship, but I just think there would be too many problems with jealousy. What people do in their own homes is their business, but polyamory is certainly not for me.

Not true. The Supreme Court ruling was very clear in the decision. Marriage is between 2 people of legal age of consent. Justice Kennedy was very clear in his confirming written opinion.

And you dont think that down the road this wont be challanged. As I remember a long time ago it seemed to me that gay marriage was not even thought about let alone legal

As someone who is part of the LGBT community, I can say that I have spoken with hundreds of people. None of them want a polyamorous marriage. That kind of defeats the whole concept of polyamory. The majority of polygamists(different than polyamory) are seen as sexist men for taking advantage of women. So no, I don't see it.

For the record, I believe in monogamy. More people support monogamy in the LGBT community than you think.

Not as long as our nation continues to be based on the "Judeo-Christian" principles upon which it was founded.

Right, and you typically find that Mormons out west as well as other far right cults do support polygamy.

At some point, anything someone wants to call marriage will be legal.

Yes, I agree if God allows us to go that long, this country will go down or God will be apologizing to Sodom and Gamorrah

I kind of think that monogamy isn't a specific commandment in holy scripture but it does appear to be a God intended goal of human love between a man and his wife.

I actually wouldn't be surprised. Some of the reasons:

1) It is permissible in Islam, but only for men. That is to say, men can have multiple wives, but women only one husband. A growing Muslim population in the West makes it very possible for this reason alone.

2) As has been mentioned already, "marriage" has become a rather loosely defined term - separated from any Christian religious context or even biological common sense. From a purely biological standpoint, plural marriage makes more sense than "gay marriage".

That said, I think many Christians do not know or simply deny a very relevant passage in the Gospel. This willful ignorance applies as much to polygamy as it does to same sex marriage:

Matthew 19:4-6

It is in these verses that Messiah DEFINES marriage. The context in which the definition is given does not alter that definition. In other words, it doesn't matter that the question asked was about divorce, because the definition not only covers divorce, but it covers at the very basic level what, according to Messiah, Marriage *is*.

IMO....

1. The secular state has nothing to do with marriage and should stay out of it. Marriage is a ANCIENT and UNIVERSAL institution (much older than the USA or any state thereof!), I believe created by God but in any case, not by the Supreme Court of California or the USA.

2. The USA has recently stripped the institution of any meaning. Since "marriage" now is WHATEVER the current US Supreme Court TELLS YOU it means (Not God.... not soceity..... not history..... not humanity), then it has no objective meaning. I see no reason why the USA cannot (and perhaps will not) declare "marriage" to be any group where there is anything. Thus, a little old lady and her Pekingese is "marriage." The group of high school cheerleaders is "marriage." Two rabbits is "marriage." Why not? "Marriage" has no meaning, only what the current Supreme Court of the United States of America itself CURRENTLY says - it self trumping all history, humanity, God. I see NOTHING to keep the USA from saying polygamy is "marriage". Nothing that should keep it from permitting boys from marrying their mom (and dad, too)..... Nothing from keeping a woman from marrying her 15 cats. After all, "marriage" only is whatever The Supreme Court of The United States of America itself currently says. Nothing more, nothing other.

Yes, I think in a few decades the US Supreme Court will consider ANY combination of people (and probably mammals) to be "marriage" Forget history.... forget God.... forget religion..... forget the church.... forget families.... all that matters is the absolute power of The Supreme Court of The United States of America to redefine anything to anything it currently likes. Reasonably, I think it has no basis to not permit polygamy - and any other combination, invention.

But, the good news IMO is that the Supreme Court, for all it's obsession over the power of itself, cannot so easily destroy what God has created and what at least 10,000 years of UNIVERSAL human experience has embraced. Sure..... old ladies and all their cats MAY choose to call their relationship "marriage" and the USA may agree..... but I suspect MOST people in the world won't. Modern secular government's war on religion - now aimed at THE most basic of all human institutions - will have only a very limited success, IMO. I hope. Marriage/family is older, bigger than the USA... I suspect it will even outlast it?

I agree that the state has nothingh to do with God given marriage, the license from the state allows you to certain benefits such as tax breaks and so on but a marriage done apart from that in front of God and a couple of witnesses is just as valid in Gods eyes. It is the committment and not the piece of paper that is important
