Has anyone ever successfully planted pumpkins? My daughter really loves to carve pumpkins in the fall and we have a HUGE garden out back so she asked me to grow some this summer.

When do I get started? How much space do I need? What shouldn't be planted near them?

For the huge ones you need special seed and a lot of work goes into them for regular pumpkins I am not sure but most vine crops like that do well with corn and they need to be kept watered, they use a lot of water

The only tip I have is... don't.
Of course that's simply because I mistook my wife's pumpkin plants for weeds and ironically killed them somewhere around independence day...

I'm often surprised by how much space the vines take up, sprawled across the earth. Beyond that, and the pretty obvious notion that you'll need some seeds and some earth to plant them, I can't offer much help.

Nearby plants and trees will hinder their growth especially the trees because they take more water and will take away from the patch.

Thanks for all the advice!

I know there are different species of pumpkins to grow. A friend of mine who lives in Florida says that they can't grow the carving pumpkins there because of the high humidity. I might have to investigate as to which kind will grow where I live.
