I was watching something on Netflix and a character told another, "God doesn't want you to be happy." Are there verses that can support or deny that claim? Remember, no debating each other but you can still answer the OP without doing that.

That probably depends on how we define 'happy'.

“Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. “For He inflicts pain, and gives relief; He wounds, and His hands also heal. “ From six troubles He will deliver you, Even in seven evil will not touch you.
Job 5:17-19 NASB

Happiness is different than joy and we should have joy and as Paul says accept whatever circumstances exist in our life. If we Have the Lord then we should be content and happy. As for verses to support either position there are many that speak of joy, Jesus also said that we would face persecution and trials but if we view them right then yes we can have joy in those as well, Pretty hard to do though, at least for me.

I don't think God wants us to be miserable. He didn't make us for that. I think it is important to God about how and where we find our happiness. Some people only seek happiness through things. But, I think ultimately God wants us to find things like contentment and peace through our relationship with Him.

The question can be answered with a yes and with a no because God has given mankind a full range of emotions that he has and as we live we will experience this full range of emotions. Yes God wants us to be happy and no God wants us to experience the other emotions that come with being made man and these emotions aid in our interactions with the rest of mankind and we learn how to cope and how to live our life in faithfulness to him.

I would say a definite yes. But we have to keep in mind that like a good parent they limit say how much candy their child should eat. Not only for the bad effects the sugar has on teeth but over eating candy can spoil their appetite for a good nutritious meal later.

Isaiah 55:9
"As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts,..."

Joy...a paradox...in the midst of grief.
Here's a song that was played at my nieces funeral. It is the best version of "The joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart" that you'll ever hear.

That's a nice rendition. It's very somber and I don't know that I would put it on my iPod to listen to it more than once. But it makes you stop and think. We aren't happy all the time as Christians. We do suffer. We do experience sorrow. The joy of Christ is what we have in our soul because of his forgiveness and salvation but we aren't always feeling so happy about it.

Indeed. But the song "Joy" leads in to...It is well...
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul
It is well
With my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul
It is well (it is well)
With my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul
