Nikki Haley is poised to take a leap into the unknown next week when she becomes the first Republican to challenge former President Trump for the GOP’s 2024 nod.

It’s a role that few other Republicans are eager to fill, given Trump’s penchant for trying to humiliate any of his political opponents, real or perceived. But Haley’s allies say that she has a unique lane in a potentially crowded GOP primary field that could help her cut through the noise, especially at a time when many Republicans are wavering on Trump’s candidacy.

I don't think she has the numbers to get very far.

Thoughts about Nikki Haley?
Reportedly, she is planning to campaign on a patriotic platform, emphasizing the inherent goodness and the great accomplishments of America, but avoiding the hardnosed and militant style that some candidates adopt.

I doubt that this will make much difference when it comes to voting in the primary elections. It could, however, be a platform that would make her an "everybody's second choice" and get her the Vice-Presidential nomination. Unlike some VP nominees, Haley does have the necessary political experience, having been governor of a state and UN ambassador, among other things.

I really like Nikki Haley and think she would make a good president. She is smart, well spoken, and has a decent record in Politics. The fact that she is a minority female would make it more difficult to label her as a sexist or racist (but they would try) in a general election match up.

However, at this point, the republican primary is between DeSantis and Trump. Of course, crazy things happen in politics. At this point in 1992 campaign nobody had ever heard of Bill Clinton. He was polling low single digits then came out of nowhere to win the Democratic nomination.

For Haley to win the nomination two things have to happen. She stays on message and is free of scandal/gaffs and the front-runners falter, causing republicans to look to (what is now) the 2nd Tier of candidates.

I just saw the Senator Tim Scott, whom Haley appointed to the Senate, is also getting set to announce he is running for President.

It could be a tricky one. I think Trump is probably still sufficiently vocal within the Republican party to be a formidable opponent to face internally. The trouble is that, when presented to the nation as a whole, I wonder if he would win again. Certainly there's a strong and vocal section of the GOP that would jump at the chance to see him in the White House again but I get the impression there's a growing part of the Republican party that would rather move on from him, and of course he is all but anathema to the Democrats.

It seems the GOP needs someone who would appeal to most of the ranks of Republicans while also appealing to floating voters, independents and even moderate Democrats who don't like seeing the party shift further left. I don't know enough about Nikki Haley to know if she is that person, but I'm not sure Trump has the broad appeal that would be needed for an effective presidency even if he did win it.

I can't help thinking the country needs something so much better than a "leader" who gets elected based on a split almost precisely along party lines, got elected on a very narrow majority, and then acts as if they had an overwhelming mandate to change everything in sight based on such a small lead.

I fear a repeat of 2016....

While most Republicans did not want Trump, those Republicans split their vote among SIXTEEN other candidates - making Trump the top vote getter.

We need ONE or TWO challengers to Trump. I think DeSantis is the leading a most likely challenger, and while I'd personally prefer Senator Scott, for now I'm backing DeSantis.
