Jesus said by the mouth of 3 witnesses, No man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.(Matthe 9:17, Mark, 2:22, Luke 5:37)

2000 years later...have we heeded his advice?

I believe the teaching is that we must become a new creature in Christ and not go back to our old nature.

You are right that we must turn away from the old nature and put on the new nature more and more in our lives, but that is a clear teaching of Paul. In this context. Jesus seems to be teaching that the new covenant must replace the old covenant of outward, national rules and regulations with the new covenant of the inner principles of God taught in the whole Bible. His teaching is what the religious leaders used to have him nailed to a cross, because he upset their legalistic control of the people.
