Hey guys!

I need help with a project of mine.

Conduct a survey of at least 6 different people to acquire your data (more is always better). Ask your subjects the following question:

Which religion do you think had the greatest effect on political, economic, and social development in the world between the years 1500 and 1800? Why do you think so?

Answer for both good and bad. :)

The greatest effect? I guess Christianity but I don't know if that could be the same for the current era. The printing press was out then to print bibles, people held to Christian values, whether they were Christian or not, and the majority of the hospitals were begun by Christians.

Evaluations aside, I think Christianity had the most influence in that period. It was a time when the WEST (Europe) came to dominate the world, and when Christianity went along for the ride - speading and growing rapidly. This would be true if you went past 1800, as well: perhaps into the early 20th Century.

Are you putting us all on a guilt trip, George? hehe I guess I'll answer this but from my perspective, our American school system mostly taught about European/American history so with that in mind I would answer with Christians had the most influence in all those categories. But as you see, that's also because I wasn't taught about many other religions while in school and now that I've been out of school for what seems like a lifetime I hadn't thought about the historical meaning of that time period.

Will you reveal to us the right answer after everyone's given you a response?

Not to worry haha, no guilt trip. And I don't think there is a right answer, but Christianity would be the most correct answer.

I think religion has been the motivating force behind a lot of history. Clear back to Abraham religion ws shaping history, it doesnt matter which, of course Christianity had the most impact but the Muslim religion going back to Mohammad definitely had an effect on history and I am sure that if I looked at the other religions it would be the same. Religion has been the single driving force behind most of history

The answer for me would be Christianity. For example, look at the Protestant Reformation, this started off a monumental religious and political event that ultimately rocked Europe for years to come, and you could see how it played a part. The RCC took a huge blow after Luther, Calvin, and the other reformation fathers came and went.

Christianity also coming into America was a big part. Individuals were not well educated here in America and so by converting those to Christianity, you could ultimately say that it was easier for the rich and so on to captivate and later enslave these individuals.

I would say that Islam would be second as we see with the Islamic Empires being such a huge force from the 3 great empires, especially with Constantinople falling in the 1450's supplanting Islam in the heart of Christendom, and placing the Christians in a lower level than Muslims.

Christianity overall though had more so of a monumental effect through the Protestant Reformation, which in turn changed all tides.

George! Your question assumes most of the people asked are going to have something of a detailed knowledge of that period. I haven't asked anyone, but I can already imagine the responses are mostly going to be biased on their particular religion or lack of it, and of course, where they have grown up and live. And of course the Reformation is going to feature in anyone who is Protestant and has a little knowledge of the period (in Western Civilization)

Well true, but it's what you would think, the person being judged/graded would be me, so the survey takers would not be held accountable for wrong answers. :)

This can be removed as a featured thread now as I turned this in last night. :)
