My husband's family was always big on camping and I could never get into it! I always prefer a real bed with air conditioning.

Good and well broken in boots (nothing like getting 15 miles from trailhead and finding out you've worn blisters on your feet).
Climbing/Rappelling gear (you're not going to find a good campsite without this)
Fire starting kit. (If you can make a fire you can survive)
Large and small knife kit in a good ready access sheath (everything from cutting wood to dealing with hostile critters that see you as their next meal and make a meal of them instead and making makeshift shelters along the way).
Metal pot (cooking, water sterilization, digging, etc.)
This is, of course, the basic stuff you should always have handy in your car all the time anyway, not just for camping.
