Matthew 26:53
53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?.../KJV
That's an interesting verse!
We all know that God has multitudes of Angels in His Service, right? But Jesus references 12 Legions od Angels. I think that up there somewhere around 75K or 77K? That a lot of Angels, but it is not "multitudes" of Angels, it is 12 Legions. So is it reasonable to assume that this was an actual detachment of God's Angels which were on duty and stood ready to go help Jesus if He called to them?
So this is like a Military detachment of soldiers. In 2 Kings 19:35 it says that one Angel slew 185,000 soldiers in one night! And here is 12 Legions of Angels ready to act! That sounds like overkill for an evacuation mission, if that was their plan. No, this was thousands of Angels, and I'd bet money that they were ready to fight!
One verse in scripture says Angels wonder about such things. My understanding is that they don't understand Salvation.
If that is so, could the 12 legions of Angels have been prepared to destroy the entire world? At this point that Jesus said that was still a couple days before Passover when he would be crucified...but, I would assume that Angels of the Lord are very intelligent in their own right. it's inknown if they could see that Jesus would be crucified. But when Jesus did not call them in to save Him, and those Angels saw that they were beating Him and crucifying Him...Ohhhh, I bet they were mad!! And probably ready to destroy the world and everything in it.
Whoa. Thank You Jesus for loving us enough to not call in those Angels!
