John baptized with water according to the covenant and the law. Jesus would baptize not with water, but with the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost came on the disciples at Pentecost according to the New Testament. The New Testament was only for Israel and Judah. By the Holy Spirit, Israel would be given a new heart and would be able to keep the law.

I do not read anything to indicate it was symbolic....John's baptism according to scripture was for remission of sins

The story of the Ephesian disciples is instructive. John did baptise with water and so to Paul however Pau's baptism was followed by the reception of the Holy Spirit while John's baptism was not.

These disciples you mentioned only knew John's baptism but Paul instructed them about Jesus.

No way is it only to the Jews. Don't you know that Paul is the MINISTER to that New Testament, New Covenant?

2 Corinthians 3:6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

John the baptizer prepared the way for Jesus. The Lord would not come until the people repented of their sins.

We still have to repent of our sins to prepare the way for the Lord in our hearts.
