Healthy eating and working out can be rough when on vacation. What are things you strive to do to maintain good health when out traveling?

I am sure that eating cake daily is part of maintaining good health while on holiday!

I am juice fasting after being on vacation. It is difficult with fifty thousand people tempting you with junk food all the time!

My last trip back home was filled with going to our favorite places to eat and then my parents had all kinds of sweets to eat at their home. So hard to say no!! Then there was the stuff on the road.

I'm back to doing my P90X workouts!

Maintaining health while on vacation:

Whatever one's idea of health is - or healthy diet - if the area you are vacationing in doesn't provide it - you have to plan and take your food with you. Fortunately for Vegans and to some extent Vegetarians - dried beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains last for decades when un-tampered with and properly stored - and brown rice for about a year.

Then there's meat jerky for the meat eaters. But unfortunately - that's not nearly enough. Something the British learned when their sailors were stricken with Scurvy and chose to include limes on their journeys - while the Chinese kept dried mung beans on their ships to sprout (and thus provide Vitamin C and many other nutrients) for their sailors.

Moral of the story is:

Should be obvious ;)

Watch what I eat, and exercise as part of the vacation as far as possible.

In years gone by I could easily gain 10-15 pounds during a 3-week trip to the US. When I stopped drinking root beer and switched to unsweetened iced tea I could last a 3-week trip without gaining any weight. When I added hiking in the mountains to the trip I could last a 3-week trip and lose weight in the process.

Last time I visited the beach I did hit the local creamery pretty hard and wonder how much damage my consumption of crab soup did to the local crab population, but I would routinely walk 8-10 miles before the time I normally have breakfast. A friend challenged me to a "workweek hustle" on Fitbit and got totally buried - I think by the end of Friday he had clocked something like 43,000 steps and I had done just shy of 100,000.

More and more menus cater to vegans/vegetarians though because they know it draws the customers in.

Perhaps in some places. In my immediate area there are none, and in the nearest city just a few. Hopefully that will change

but...

The problem isn't just availability. Part of the problem is twisting nature. That is our present food system. It is like the non-dairy ice cream I bought the other day. I know why it's available - supermarkets are testing the waters offering such products. There is not a single animal product or by-product in this "ice cream" (and I must admit it was extremely tasty) - however it was absolutely loaded with chemically processed sweeteners (high fructose corn syrup/glucose syrup and refined sugar). Heck - it's a frozen product - they could have used a fruit sugar, or whole dates, figs or unrefined sugar such as dark muscovado or natural honey.

You see my current diet as I post recipes and meals I have on this website. But if there is a way to split up something like a pumpkin seed or a legume or any other whole food - then you better believe that Big Food is going to do exactly that - and then sell the masses the individual parts. God intended it to be eaten as a whole package - but the Devil will take it, flavor it, and offer it to us in pieces - because he is a thief.

There's temptation to be "bad" but IMO, it's easy to be good....

On my last trip, we stayed at a Hilton. They had a really nice fitness center, I could easily keep up with my routine. And they had an all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast (included in the room rate, which my employer paid). Now, some of my peers PILED the plate with bacon, etc. (and it's tempting to do that) but it was just as easy for me to enjoy some oatmeal (very good, btw) and some fruit (very fresh and a nice variety) and maybe a hard boiled egg.

When I'm eating out somewhere, first of all I don't hold myself to TOO strong of rule - it's okay to "fudge" a bit NOW AND THEN. But rarely does a restaurant have ONLY terrible food on the menu. There's usually some reasonable options. But yes, it tempting. And there's no rule you have to eat all they serve you, it's okay to leave it on the plate (forget what your mother said about starving children in China) or (if you can) take it home. I USUALLY take some home with me. BT W, here in The People's Republic of California, it's the law that normally restaurants must tell you the calorie count of the meal (it's on the menu) - and I always check that carefully; I've often decided what I'd order largely according to that information - it's very helpful (if often shocking).

Aww. Sorry! My vacations consist of going back home to where we grew up where our family and friends all live. Of course we have to visit all of our favorite food places! My sister sometimes invites me to walk on the trails with her but that never seems enough.

When I was a kid we would go see the grandparents in Ohio and visit all the food places we liked. There was a chicken resturant, a root beer stand and a pizza place. It was pretty much mandatory that we go to all three if we could.

AH, I think I'm seeing the problem, lol.....

I DO suddenly remember when Grandma and Grandpa came to visit from Wisconsin (they are both in heaven now), grandma LOVED to bake (and they typically came at Christmas time). In truth, I'm not much of a sweets person (and I actually hate gingerbread) but I realized she did all this baking for us kids. My mom doesn't ever serve dessert and I grew up with no sweets in the house (the fact that my dad is a diabetic was part of the reason), we just weren't use to this. But we ate.... cuz we loved grandma.... and it pleased her. In those days, I was pretty skinny (a point grandma pointed out to me constantly) so I could take the calories.

Grandparents do have that influence. When I first dated my husband all I heard was, "You have to try this because grandma made it." So yeah, I had to try everything that was put in front of me even if I already ate.
