We're toilet shopping and I would like to hear opinions about your favorite style of toilet!

We have one toilet that is a tall boy style (also called comfort height) and I find it to be too tall but then as I get older will it be easier for me to get on and off due to the height? The other two toilets are regular height and I think maybe we should keep them that height because if we ever move, families with kids would not want too high of a toilet?

Thoughts?

From what I understand (although without having conducted detailed study!) a lower bowl makes it more likely you'll - er - completely empty.

A balance of comfort and future-proofing can be achieved with an accessory that's effectively a booster - it's a few inches thick and sits on top of the bowl, then you sit on top of it. It means that people who may have trouble getting up from a regular height seat can put this thing on the top and sit on it, then remove it when they are done. I'd imagine it would need fairly regular cleaning.

You could also put a hand rail beside the toilet if you're concerned about someone needing a little help getting up again. Just make sure it's solidly secured to the wall studs - the last thing you want is someone putting their weight on it only to find it breaks away from the wall and the person falls.

Had a "tall boy" installed just yesterday. I can now sit and stand without having to lever myself up or down. Such a pleasure! The rest of family can go in the woods!

I was thinking of installing hand rails where needed in the future. Well, maybe not too far in the future because it could help my dad out. Maybe I'll get him to install them when he comes out because he's pretty handy like that.

Are you a tall guy? I'm 5'5" and so the regular size toilet works for me right now but I can see where the tall boy one would be easier in the future if my knees get any worse.

I would say to have both. Our last house we had one tall one and one regular one. With my husband being 6', he appreciates the tall one. This one has just the regular ones. I do understand the knee problems.

Are your knees bad in a way that can be improved? I know not everything lends itself to gradual correction but if something like gentle exercise might improve your knees that would seem like a better solution than something that effectively makes it easier to let them be weaker.

My knees really aren't that bad and I probably have arthritis in my knees and possibly even rheumatoid arthritis since that's what my mom had and it's hereditary. I just like to protect them now whenever possible so I don't need any surgeries in the far off future and I look at how my mom's body had deteriorated before she passed away and know what to expect in my future.

I've always wondered what a heated toilet felt like.

Probably nice and warm, I'd guess...
I reckon it would be, yeah. Would there be some temperature controls or something? You don't want to scorch your butt on the loo, you know.

Probably something like having a heated seat in the car but - uh - slightly different....

Honestly the only time I ever even thought about it was when the church was having one installed in the fellowship hall. They wanted to have some hand rails and a toilet that was a little higher installed for some of the older members. It isn't something I have spent a lot of time thinking about otherwise

How long did it take the church committee to come to an agreement? LOL It took many months for my previous church to agree on bathroom remodeling designs!

It is remarkable how long it can take a church to come to an agreement over something simple. Years ago a church my mother attended had the problem that people on committees struggled to get their heads around large sums of money but could understand small sums. The result was that if it was going to cost $50,000 to repair the roof people would just rubber-stamp it without even considering whether there might be cheaper or better options but if it was going to cost $20 for some new trays to serve coffee the arguments started over whether it would be better to spend $18 on different trays, or maybe save $5 by buying three instead of four, and so on.

Try getting a church to agree on a new carpet color LOL

Well...I have a friend who ended up using a bucket on their sailboat when their toilet stopped working. So really no biggie :D
