LaTeX Powered By MathJax Enabled Here In Our "Science & Technology" Forum

Hello CH Community,

We have enabled the use of $\LaTeX$ powered by MathJax here in this forum. $\LaTeX$ is a markup language used to display pretty mathematical expressions. For example, the code:

\$\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\left(\frac{1}{k^2}\right)=\frac{\pi^2}{6}\$

displays:

$\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\left(\frac{1}{k^2}\right)=\frac{\pi^2}{6}$

For those of you not familiar with using $\LaTeX$, please feel free to post any questions you have if you wish to use it. :)

It's too early in the morning for my brain to look at that ;) But I'm glad you have set us up with it!

Basically, if you wish to display a mathematical expression or equation, you dimply enclose your $\LaTeX$ code within dollar sign tags. For example, suppose I wish to display the anti-derivative form of the fundamental theorem of calculus...I would then type out:

\$\displaystyle\int_a^b f(x)\,dx=F(b)-F(a)\$

to get:

$\displaystyle\int_a^b f(x)\,dx=F(b)-F(a)$

Ah that's nothing, check this out.

1+1=2 Lol

That's all the mathematical symbols I need. ;)

Did you know it took Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead over 360 pages to prove definitively that $1 + 1 = 2$ in their “Principia Mathematica”, published in three volumes in 1910, 1912 and 1913. The first volume was co-written by Whitehead, although the later two were almost all Russell’s work.

I guess they didn't think to just use their fingers?

Is there a different symbol that could be used to indicate something is a LaTEX code? It's a bit irritating when saying something ranges in price from $10 - $20 (ten dollars - twenty dollars, as processed by LaTEX) and then trying to figure out what tweaks are needed to make it display properly.

It's even more bizarre when saying that the cheap model is $10 but the more expensive one is closer to $20.

If I change it now, then all previous posts using $\LaTeX$ will break. To post a dollar sign here in this forum (the only forum where it's active), precede the dollar sign with a backslash. :)

How many posts are we talking about? Would it be easy to identify them and change the tags? It's just that in a forum about technology it seems predictable to use a dollar sign as, well, a dollar sign to show the price of something. Something like a pipe | isn't used much in regular text, or maybe putting things in square brackets or something?

Sorry but you're wrong. Latex is white cheap paint for walls.

$10-20

I guess I don't understand what the problem is? That's how I state between 10 dollars and 20 dollars.

OK, try something like this.

You can get a cheap model for \$10 but if you want the one with extra bells and whistles you'll need more like \$20.

which renders into:

Or if you write a longer post about how the laptop you want is on offer for only \$850, having been reduced in price by 75% from its original retail price, and you're thinking of buying it even if you need to put it on your credit card. There are a few optional extras that are an extra cost, such as upgrading the DVD rewriter for a Blu-Ray player (at a cost of \$50), upgrading the storage to a triple SSD setup for \$500.

The battery is supposed to be good for five hours but if that's a concern you can get an expanded battery that's good for 12 hours for an extra \$150, and a rapid charger for \$100.

Whichever options you go for, delivery is \$25 for a seven day service and \$50 for an overnight service.

all this renders to:

I left this first post open on my phone in the train when a guy came to check the tickets to impress the people around me. They think I'm highly intelligent now.

*chuckles*

Best to appear smart even if it is only the phone that seems so :p
