Last night at the Republican Convention, it was announced that Trump selected JD Vance, age 39 from Ohio as his VP running mate.

Thoughts?

I personally love that the guy is young and that could draw in some of the Independents...possibly?

A much younger VP could be a breath of fresh air into the usual clutch of almost exclusively old white men. I read that Vance is the only person at the top of either ticket who served in the military, which could be a plus.

I'm not familiar with where he stands politically so can't really comment on that.

Since the Republicans are fielding two white men and the Democrats are presumably fielding a white man and a black woman I imagine we can look forward to more of the usual drivel about it being racist and sexist to not vote for the black woman even if you despise everything she stands for.

If Trump does win in November I still kinda hope he identifies as a woman towards the end of his term. It would be interesting to see if the Democrats would recognise him - sorry, her - as the first female president. There would be something curiously ironic about the person they hate so much becoming the first female president but only after being elected.

He USED to be excellent.....

But on July 8, he gave a speech completely changing his views. He's now aligned himself 100% with Trump (who he previously denounced), changed his view on abortion to match Trump's new view (it's fine in all cases IF that's what the State allows), dropped balanced budget and lower taxes views, etc.

Sad.

Vance is probably as good a choice as any and, for various reasons, better than the others who were under consideration.

Not only are his credentials and personal life appealing, but he's hardworking and effective on the campaign trail. We may remember other choices in the past who were "senior statesmen" or were chosen in order to "balance the ticket," and turned out to be big disappointments as campaigners. Examples include Henry Cabot Lodge, Jack Kemp, and Paul Ryan.
