Many people talk about anointed preaching and Spirit empowered preaching and that seems to mean that the holy Spirit has had a special and direct influence on what was said in a sermon rather than that the preaching was well thought out, clear, and well presented so that the listeners know what the message was. Do you think that there is such a thing as preaching in the power of the holy Spirit?

Do you think a preacher today is in a similar position to saint Stephen the martyr? Saint Stephen's sermon was mainly a rehearsal of the history of Israel. He brought home the core truth of Israel's existence. Their trials and works and their failings. He finally pointed to Jesus as the fulfilment of everything that Israel was meant to be and that the leaders of Judaism rejected.

'You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are for ever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers. You are the ones that received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you have not kept it.' (Acts 7:51-53) Here his sermon ended. Then when they rejected him, took up stones to stone him, as they were killing him the holy scriptures record that he said "'Look,' he said, 'I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!'" But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them.' When he had said this, he died.

Yes, and it doesn't need to come from the pulpit or preacher. Was at home alone studying with God as my teacher, inspired at what He was revealing and ask God to send someone who I could tell what He has shown me. Door bell rings, Thank you Lord. Poor encyclopedia salesman, probably the last of his kind. He started his speech, I asked questions, and then the opening came, so I explained what I had just learned. As I was explaining, his head started to glow. I was caught up in seeing his head glow like Moses on Mount Sinai. The Holy Spirit took over my speech and both him and I were inspired by what was said. It was not me talking. It was as if time vanished and we stepped out of this world into His to sit at His feet to learn.

God's Word is alive and active and will not return to him empty Hebrews 4:12, Isaiah 55:11. The Holy Spirit uses God's Word so any preacher that uses God's Word will of course have the power of the Holy Spirit working in the people who listen.
