Is it rude to ask what they are going to be serving if someone invites you to dinner and doesn't say what it will be?

It's not rude when you have intolerances to certain foods or allergies.

I wouldn't say it's rude, although I'd have hoped a person wanting to host dinner would check dietary requirements and preferences before planning a meal. There's not much point cooking a meal that your guests can't or won't eat.

If you feel uncomfortable asking directly you can always sound out the host in some other way, even if it's just a question of figuring what sort of contribution might be appropriate. You can match a dessert to the mains, or take a bottle of an appropriate wine, or whatever else you'd normally do.

And a host should not be offended if a guess "passes" on some food, especially if it's known they have dietary issue.
