When I was in high school we were encouraged to have international pen pals. I had numerous ones from the girl in Canada who didn't do much to the one in Tunisia who flirted me to try to come to my country to my longtime one in Iraklion, Crete.

Did anyone have international pen pals (paper writing, not email)? Do you keep in touch? Did you ever meet?

I am not in touch with any of mine but the one from Crete in Greece is the cousin of my BFF's pen pal so I ask about her from time to time.

I had an internet friend in India... He was a Bhakti Hindu and we had lots of talks about religion. He invited me to India and I'm now sorry I never took him up on that (he never took me up in visiting here, either). We haven't chatted in several years now.

You didn't have a pen pal? Aw, you missed out! In elementary school we had pen pals from the other schools in the town so that was fun because sometimes we actually got to meet!

It's funny though that the girls were always better at maintaining the writing relationship whereas the boys would only write a few times and that's that.

No, I never had that experience. My daughter had a pen pal from India.

Oh when I was 16 I had a pen pal. I had one from Germany. She was a pen pal from a friend who complained she had too many, so I took her as a pen pal. Was good for my German.
After a few years we stopped writing. Never met. She had a schildkrotte, a turtle, and lived on the Luftschifferstrasse I remember lol.

Sometimes meeting in person throws off the relationship because you have an idea of what the person is but then it's not quite right in real life. I have done that when meeting people in real life that I was friends with on forums and it doesn't always work out and we stop talking.

The neat thing about having penpals in different areas is when you elect to send Christmas gifts and birthday gifts to each other! My Greek penpal sent me some nice things and I cherish an apron she gave me with Greek designs on it.
