If you were standing in a grocery line with half a cart full of random groceries, while the person immediately behind you only had a couple items to purchase, would you graciously permit the person behind to step ahead of you? Why or why not?

To be honest, I might not even think about it since I usually have a lot on my mind and I'm thinking about other things while I wait

Absolutely! I've done it so many times before that it's pretty much instinct. These days with Covid the lines aren't long though and they have plenty of cashiers open.

I remember at Christmastime last year I went back to a place that made candy and sold it in their shop and got in line with my tiny purchase of 2 bags. Another cashier called me over to a register she had just opened and 2 elderly ladies followed behind me. I thought they only had what was in their hands so I let them go before me even though they at first refused. But then I found out why...the cashier pulled a huge box of other items that they had ordered ahead of time out from behind the counter and it took a LONG time to ring them up. The ladies were embarrassed but I was kind and told them I would help them carry their items to the car for them. That's when the cashier realized that it should be the store's job and she interrupted and assured the ladies they had someone who would do it. Then when it was my turn to get waited on the ladies told me to Have a Merry Christmas and "God Bless You" and that made me smile...the cashier gave me one of my bags of candy for free for being nice :)

I've done this many times. MOSTLY at Costco (where there are no "fast lines" for few items).

Sure, I've done that many times. As long as I'm not pressed for time. It only takes a minute or two to let someone else go first and show some kindness.

If I was aware of their presence then almost certainly. I always appreciate it when people let me go first when I have one thing in my hand and they have a month's worth of shopping. I'm not always particularly paying attention to how many items people around me have.

I too have done that many times but there are a few people in town who seem to have a sense of entitlement who will literally butt in line ahead of you. The best way to handle this is to object loudly and longly even getting the cashier or manager involved. The irony is that if I had seen them I likely would have offered to let them go ahead.
