No the co2 does not stay in your system you breath it out of you and breath in more fresh oxygen.

Of course you know how the body uses oxygen, right? You have to breath! Breathing gives us energy! and carbon dioxide is a byproduct of that process.

Actually it can build up to toxic levels in some situations, it's called hypercapnia and can be cause by a number of conditions that are breathing related as well as circulatory, neurological, skeletal, infectious diseases and other medical problems that you might be born with or develop during your life.

Next time you have a hospital blood test for heart surgery and such look at the results and compare them to normal ones, this will probably show up in one (the doctors will probably mention it to you if it is far out of line and look for the cause).

(Getting old and ending up hospitalized multiple times during the last year have been an educational experience for me, but not one I would have chosen voluntarily.)

If you think you are having a problem with this see a doctor ASAP before it incapacitates or kills you.
