Modern medicine is profit based rather than care based, does not usually address the underlying issue(s) of many diseases, and almost always (with a few exceptions) provides no cures - as such a thing would eliminate the profit on which it is based. The promise of cures, however, is always around the corner with new drugs and treatments, because one day...

The modern medicine I do trust is that which is available for certain physical injuries and relief, such as if I break a bone or have an open wound that needs healing. I do not trust it for much else.

When I was 8 years old, I jumped off a small hill into a bunch of leaves. What I didn't know at the time was that there was a yellow jacket nest in those leaves. I was wearing shorts and the yellow jackets even managed to get up my short legs. I ran home screaming and they were following me. I had stings all over my legs, arms, back and face. I started to not be able to breathe and my dad had to call the ambulance. To cut this story short, I'm allergic to any type of bee stings and have to carry an Epi-Pen wherever I go.

Perhaps at age 56 from pneumonia, but then it may be modern medicine that got me the pneumonia in the first place as I had been taking stomach acid reducer for 10 years and it was found to have a lot of side effects including more susceptible to pneumonia. Besides the answer to heartburn is to drink vinegar because heartburn is caused from not enough acid to close the gate and so the remaining acid goes beyond.

Likely on my birthday.

I MIGHT have made it to full term and delivered naturally, but likely would not have lived for long. Such was the fate of two of my older siblings. I had the same problem, but was delivered early (by C-Section) and immediately had surgery.

56

I developed walking pneumonia (double = both lungs) that went sepsis (infection spread to other organs that started to shut down). So I drove myself to the ER with the complaint that I could not catch my breath (although I was having trouble speaking words). They placed large IV needles in both arms and connected two antibiotic IV bags to each arm to pump me full of the strongest antibiotics they had. According to the doctors I was within about 24 hours of being dead of multiple organ failure.

That was 4 years ago.

(prior to that, medicine was stitches, tetanus shots and school vaccines)

I don't know if anything would have finished me off in my early childhood because I don't really remember, largely because at the time I had no understanding of what medical stuff was. As far as I can remember I've had no need for anything meaningful, medically speaking.

Even the supposedly deadly COVID (the original flavor of it, not one of the "milder but more contagious" variants) was little more than an inconvenience. I fought that off with the aid of some bed rest and some whisky.
