I have some things to give away to those who are local and will pick up...like a very old tv that works, a treadmill that needs a new belt (I can't get the screws off that I need to in order to change the belt myself) and a dresser topper thing that's hard to describe. What kind of site or app is best to use for local to offer free without some weirdo coming to my house?

I usually just take my stuff to Goodwill or Salvation Army.

Sometimes the Veterans will come get stuff if you call them.

The key thing is that if you are going to give something to someone else, with or without anything in return, you have to meet them somewhere. You either meet them somewhere suitably public at a suitable time of day, or you take it to them, or they come to you. If what you've got is big and bulky and you can't load it yourself, you're pretty much stuck with someone coming to you.

A while back I met a lady who was keen to get a deal sorted out fairly quickly and ended up meeting her after dark near a supermarket. I figured there were all sorts of ways that could go south if unfounded allegations were made, so I said I'd meet her just inside the supermarket, in the lobby. There it's light, there are people about, and it's far less likely that silly allegations would get made. Chances are they wouldn't anyway but I didn't want a simple purchase of some used personal effects to turn into something ugly.

Another thing I tend to do, if I'm meeting a woman or visiting a woman I don't necessarily know very well, is to take my wife with me.

Chances are Faceache has a group of people in your area looking to buy and sell. Or you could try Craiglist or some such.

For something like your treadmill the chances are there's still value there, even if you don't have the right screwdrivers the chances are someone out there does and will fix it easily. I've seen a few people offering things for sale on the basis they are inviting people to make an offer for their stuff. A depressing number of people say things like "no low ball offers" without giving a minimum they will accept. It's very common for poeple to offer items that are likely to be large and bulky for sale without listing the dimensions either, or useful information like whether an item like a treadmill will come apart or fold, or whether it needs a full-size pickup or a trailer to haul.

Oh I intend to list as much information as necessary. I don't want someone showing up and removing parts of the treadmill in my driveway. It's all or nothing ;)

Put it at the street. If they go get the big stuff in no time the good things are taken away by ppl. LOL I get my furniture there too. Kids love it when someone dumps their stuff.

It seems to me that someone among the best-known charity stores, like the Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, or St. Vincent de Paul Society, will pick up. BUT be forewarned about old TVs. No one wants them, and you probably will have to pay someone to have it taken away. There is a chance, if you put something on the curb, that it will disappear, but even those pickers are choosy.

Not thinking so much the "all or nothing" thing, more answering the kind of questions it's reasonable to expect people to want to know. In my local group it's amazing how many people will list a piece of furniture for sale and not mention the dimensions. One person was selling a long case clock and I asked three times for the dimensions but never got them. For me that was critical - I needed to know if it would fit in my car before going out to get it. Another person invited me to go to their house and measure it for myself, which rather defeated the point because I didn't really want a 40 mile round trip to find out if something would fit.

Then there are the ones that say things like "pictures on request". You know, if you're selling something why not just post a picture of it so people can see just what it is you're selling.

When I was clearing out a house in the US I was really disappointed in Goodwill. I was trying to give them literally a pickup load of stuff, that I'd gone through to weed out the junk, and all I needed from them was to send someone in a pickup. They wouldn't do it, but very generously invited me to deliver it to them. Yeah, right, I've got nothing better to do when sorting out someone's estate than make half a dozen round trips in a small car so they can have stuff for free.

I'm not surprised. When I was writing the earlier post, I didn't want to direct anyone to the wrong outfit, but I did know that one of them at least will pick up while another definitely will not. I suspected that the first one was Salvation Army and the latter one was Goodwill Industries, but I didn't want to trust to my memory on that.

BTW, I am sure that they will not pick up just anything and everything a person might want to throw out or give away, so anyone who is interested, inquire first.

Really? That's weird. The Dutch come immediately to pick everything up. Hey its for free!!!
I had that w old clothes. It was too much fuzz to bike it to some place and I cant store it here, so I just threw it away. W clothes they expect you to wash and fold it, which was too much effort and my rabbit had made a nest in it, so hmm maybe noone is very disappointed that I just threw it away lol.

When I was trying to get rid of it I was right down to the wire a couple of days before my flight home left so I'd lined up a way to get rid of it all if nobody wanted it. In the end I found a local thrift store that would take it. Sadly the day I showed up with it they had just had someone else show up unannounced with a huge pile of stuff, so they asked if I could take it back in a weeks' time. I hated to be so blunt with them but the options were either take it now, or it goes in the trash, because I'm leaving the country in two days. They made space for it. They probably got at least a couple of hundred dollars for it.

Americans are too lazy! We want someone to put it in our car for us and maybe even come to our house and set it up ;)
