The new trend to reduce plastic is for hotels to not give out the little shampoos and conditioners. Some still supply lotion though. What they're doing instead is to have the shampoo, conditioner and shower gels in larger containers in the shower with a pump. The case is locked to prevent tampering. Would you feel comfortable using these or would you still suspect something weird could happen to them?

Biodegradable packaging isn't all that expensive, I'd be happier with that... but as long as the product isn't junk, I'd be okay with it!

If someone wants to tamper there are all sorts of things they can do in a hotel room to make life unpleasant or dangerous for the next occupant. I can't say I've paid much attention to the locks on things like the soap in the shower but can't imagine it would be particularly difficult if someone wanted to pick the lock and put something totally different in there.

Truth be told it's been a while since I stayed in a hotel, so can't remember whether we took our own toiletries or used what was on offier.

For a long time I was traveling for business, now not so much. But I still travel for fun and have a night or two hotel stay almost once a month at least every couple of months. I never pack toiletries, unless my travel takes me to family or a friends place and not a hotel. I always travel super light and I find that where I stay they always have everything I need. If not they have it at the front desk or their souvenir shop. And if that doesn’t work, there is always a pharmacy or some sort of store available. In case they don’t have anything (rare) I go get it. I don’t take the toiletries back with me, I leave it all in the trash in the room.

However, to the question… I do think about it. I am a little more comfortable with the little bottles that have a seal on them. But, I check them out when I arrive and if I don’t want to use them, I’ll stop somewhere before coming back to the room. Yes, I buy a little toothbrush and paste and dispose of it.

Lately, I have been staying in AirBnB type places. So far I’ve had an excellent experience but I have noticed that many of them provide large open bottles or those large wall dispensers. I feel okay with it, for some reason I don’t fear the places. I think the owners take better care of their places than hotels.

My last trip I stayed in a hotel one night, and it was very nice for what it was. It was in the middle of a lot of restaurants in walking distance and all the toiletries were there. My next stop on the same trip was two night at an AirBnB and it was in the middle of a golf resort, so town was about 8 miles away, and the general store of the complex was about 2 miles away. But I recommend it 100%. They also provided everything I needed. (I did pack a toothbrush and toothpaste for my road trip).

It is always best to carry the necessary products with us instead of relying on the hotel for it. Whenever my dad travels, he has a separate kit were he takes Soap, Shampoo, Oil etc...so that he uses only his own product not the one given in Hotel.

Classic Liberal "feel good" move that accomplishes virtually nothing except make the liberal FEEL better. Rather like some Liberal flying in a jet plane while insisting on a paper straw. It's how Liberals roll.

I know that toiletries are a dime a dozen wherever I go (have been) except for family and friends, so I do pickup some on my way before visiting them, and I just leave the large bottles for them. Some family may live 25-30 miles from the nearest store and I don't just expect them to provide me with my necessities. However, in the past ten years I've had to travel with medications, so many medications, that I carry certified letters to show TSA (lots of rules bringing the stuff back into the USA). I only do carry-on and I don't have the time at the airport to pull out all my toiletries of little bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shaving gel, and lotions, and have them inspected, it'll take twice as long to get through security. They still rub my belly with their pads, make me touch myself and show my hands under some scanner along with the wand. So for me, it's just easier to hope the stuff is provided by the hotel and if it's not not I don't fret, I'll just buy it.

I brought up this thread because we recently went to visit family and the hotel we stayed it has ceased to supply guests with shampoos and conditioners but they still give out the little lotions in bottles. They had shampoo, conditioner and body wash in bigger plastic container dispensers adhered to the shower wall and I was the first one to use them because I had to pump them quite a few times to get the flow going. It was okay but I wonder what they'll be like in a year's time of usage?

My guess is that this sort of thing will be the grand idea that theoretically reduces plastic usage but actually increases it.

It reminds me of a place a friend works, that serves food in a self-service diner style of setting and offers plastic cutlery. Of course the cutlery isn't wrapped in plastic because that's not environmentally friendly, but what it means is that people take a couple of knives and forks because the first one is likely to have been touched by the previous person and nobody wants that. So instead of a little bit of thin and lightweight plastic being used (which might be recyclable anyway) they end up using more hard plastic. In situations like this, with a pump-style dispenser that has previously been used by who-knows-who, room service will either have to give it a thorough clean so it never gets crusty and skanky, or they'll find nobody wants to use it because it just looks gross. And that's before you even consider the possibility of people playing pranks if they manage to open the lock and replace the shampoo with something else entirely.
