How do you avoid getting ripped off when hiring a general contractor to renovate your house?

Referrals and holding money back. Never pay it all up front, that is just asking for trouble. Progress payments are fine, but never pay the last 15-25% until the job is complete.

Asking other people who they used sometimes helps. It means something if others have had a good experience and the work was done well

Even a good contractor can do a bad job We dealt with that earlier this year and I don't know who to use now for our next project.

Do the work yourself. At least that way if you make a hash of it you've only got yourself to blame.
