Have you ever hitchhiked?

Have you ever given a lift to a hitchhiker?

I never hitchhiked. When I was first driving a friend of mine would often hitch a ride into town because he couldn't afford to run a car and public transport was all but useless. If I saw him I'd give him a ride. Back then I'd occasionally give a hitchhiker a ride but these days I'd be more cautious.

I did hitchhike, and it often was on major highways. I never had a bad experience, but now when I think back on those days, I shudder.

Fortunately, the days of routine hitchhiking are thing of the past for almost everyone. Just think of how seldom any of us these days sees a person on the side of the road with his thumb out, but it once was a normal part of American life.

I have not, and would not hitchhike.

No.
Reason: fear.

But I recall my father did so all the time when he was in the military and college... it was considered safe (at least for a man). And when he was in uniform, it was a patriotic thing to do, vets would make a point to give a lift. Times have changed.

Back in the '70s I hitch-hiked all the time. I thumbed my way to Calgary and back. One way is more than 2,000 miles. I wouldn't do it today unless it was an emergency.

I hitchhiked several times between Central Wa. and So. California, even stoned out of my gourd in Mexico on my way to Guatemala, (that was, as @Ammi said in the '70's). That was then, this is now. I also picked up hitch hikers if and (hardly) when I had a vehicle.
Today? No way, Jose!

No to both questions. Your turn to answer.

Yes to both questions, years ago. I think the cell phone invention has done a lot to remove hitch hikers. It's always dangerous to do. And a woman should never do it.
