Has your church done a Hymn Sing event where you go there to only sing hymns and not have a service? If so, how did you go about doing it, did you advertise to the community and did you do a freewill offering (basket by the door on the way out)?

We have had one or two in the past. Mainly for the churches my husband serves. No freewill basket. Basically he would have some picked out and would also ask for people attending to ask for their favorite hymns. Every once in a while, he will have a short one before the morning service begins.

Not my current church but it is part of my heritage.

The church I grew up in had "decoration day" every spring. This was a time when families of those buried in the cemetery would come and put flowers on the graves. The church would take up an offering for the upkeep of the cemetery at the same time.

On "decoration Sunday" we would not have Sunday School but instead would have a two hour church service, with the names of those buried in the cemetery the previous year read aloud, two different preachers, lot's of "special music" and "testimonies". After church we had a huge "dinner on the grounds" and after everyone was finished eating would would have a hymn sing.

During the hymn sing the minister would pick a few songs and take request from the congregation.

It is actually a neat little tradition in the rural south and the church I grew up in still does it every spring. However, the attendance is way down compared to what it used to be.
