How do you find good, trustworthy handymen in your community? Do you ask for references? How do you know what pricing is reasonable if you're new to the area?

We have Amish who do a lot of work but it seems that when I want the work done is when they're out in the fields. I tried calling a guy from the local newspaper and he never bothered to return my call. I just want someone who has scaffolding to do a bit of work and is insured and bonded. My neighbors are mostly new too so I'm waiting to see who they use for some work! LOL

Google "local carpenter" or "local handyman". Check reviews and pics of work. Contact at least 3 different contractors.

Go with middle price and someone that does the work themselves as opposed to playing middleman. The work is generally better if the one running the show is also the one doing the skilled labor. Sometimes you can find someone to do it by the hour. I charge everyone a flat by the hour rate regardless of who they are or where they are located or what the job is. If you can find one that produces the reciepts for the materials then that shows some level of honesty.

What are you trying to have done?

Just curious

I do make it a point to contact and generally complete jobs for Angie's list customers in a slightly more urgent manner. Reputation is important in my field.

Don't the customers have to pay for Angie's list though?

I forgot I started this thread! What I need to have done is this...we have a 2 story house that's on a hilly piece of land so a normal ladder is hard to stabilize and our shutters all need to be cleaned and repainted. There are birds living behind the shutters and I would love to have some new netting or something put behind the shutters to keep them out. It's not a complicated job but because of the height it's something I prefer not to do myself since I get dizzy.

I would love to ask for some recommendations from people at my church but I don't live very near my church and no one lives in my state :(

The trouble with the yellow pages is that there's no way to tell if the tradesman is any good. We used to get a local publication that worked on local recommendations and apparently took any complaints against a listed tradesman very seriously.

No handymen here that do it for free, but today I met a handywoman who carried my new rabbit cage in my bike for me, my that thing was heavy, and told me how to make that thing. Lol she was strong.
