Do you think that handshakes are a thing of the past and we might move on to some other way of greeting that is non-contact such as a bow?

No, I think they will always be a part of our lives

Maybe in a business context. In a more social and personal context almost certainly not. Trying to tell people not to have physical contact with each other over an indefinite period isn't going to work.

I think it's possible, BUT every alternate greeting seems so silly or artificial that this might be the biggest impediment to people being comfortable with a new way.

Bowing seems obviously to be an imitation of something Japanese...or else just plain playacting. And then there's the quick hand (or fist) to the heart, but it seems like something from Star Trek, so again, comical. There's the quick military-type salute which doesn't work unless its a quick flick of the wrist kind of wave which, however, doesn't look particularly friendly. So, I guess we may wind up doing whatever seems natural, such as a quick wave from shoulder level.

I wonder what others think they actually could do and not be embarrassed by it!

We could always be radical and continue to shake hands, and just be more conscious about hand washing. We should do that anyway - even without the issues caused by the virus you never know if someone has clean hands or not.

For some perhaps. I'm looking forward to freedom to shake peoples' hands and hug people.

One of my dearest friends is German and is one of the most affectionate people I know.
