Does your church have bathrooms that can accommodate the handicap who are in wheelchairs?

The one in church doesn’t but I think the bathroom downstairs in the church hall might.

My little church needs to figure out how to make at least one bathroom accessible for wheelchairs, especially as our congregation gets older. With the old cinder blocks, I think it's too expensive to really make it the way we need it.

It can be tricky. I heard something of a conversation at my last church about upgrading the bathrooms - the men's room has a wide stall (I assume the women's does too) but apparently it doesn't meet current requirements. To make it wider would mean either losing the other stall completely, or making the path to get to it narrow enough that a wheelchair would struggle. So the only alternative is to trash the whole layout and start over. Chances are that project won't be happening any time soon.

For some reason, the men's bathroom is easier for the wheelchair to get into at my church?? I don't understand that since the rooms were built at the same time in the 60s (maybe 50s).

That's odd. I can't really comment on how accessible the stall actually is, not being a wheelchair user myself, but it looks like it should be accessible. Although it was a very elderly congregation virtually everyone was more or less mobile, although a few used walking aids.

There are different size wheelchairs. The ones that are just for transport are less wide, from what I'm told, but then there are some others that need more space.

When you said one bathroom was easier to access than the other I figured it was a larger stall.

There are some impressive wheelchairs out there. I used to regularly visit a park where an elite wheelchair athlete trained. Seeing him move around was impressive.

I'm not sure if it's the door or the stall door that is larger than for the women's bathroom?
