Hello Spikey, and welcome! Where are you working? A former pastor at my last church was sent to South America as a missionary and it sounds like he had a pretty wild (and very much blessed) ride out of it.

I am with YWAM. So far I have been to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, India, Nepal.
Would love to go to Asia someday and Italy.

I suspect that the most amazing missionaries in the world were the Jesuits. Sixty years ago I was educated by them and at that time it took seven years to train one. They had to master literally everything about their target group --- their language, history, culture, religion, etc. They also learned a marketable skill to support themselves and benefit the community. They seldom, if ever, came home.
