How about you; still painting? Wasn't water color your medium? Or was it acrylic? I wish had the time and patience and motivation to draw something other than blueprints.

My favorite is actually working with pastels (chalks) and I'm working on 3 portraits right now! I'm so excited to get them done. I love how quickly I can work up something with the pastels and get frustrated with other mediums because it's too slow to get it out of my head and onto paper/canvas.

Is that what it was; pastels? That makes sense. Are you doing portraits from pictures or live subjects? I can sketch a person but the detail will always be lacking or inaccurate unless I have a pic to reference.

Now when doing something out of my head I do prefer to sketch a rough skeleton or form for the subject matter. Sort of helps get proportions correct for me.

I only work with photos because I can work for a while, put it aside and then come back in a day or two at my leisure. I also like to finish a piece and put it away to look at a few days later to see what problems need fixing (if there are any) before signing it.

You do it correctly by starting with a sketch that gets proportions down first.
