The invention of corrective eye lenses is believed to have began between 1268 and 1289 in Italy. The inventor is unknown. The earliest eyeglasses were worn by monks and scholars. They were held in front of the eyes or balanced on the nose. The invention of the printing press in 1452, the growing rate of literacy and the availability of books, encouraged new designs and the eventual mass production of inexpensive eyeglasses.

Such clever Catholics, eh? Inventing eye glasses and the printing press. The first printed bibles were Catholic too. Praise God for his blessings through his Church.

Come to think of it, before that they used scrolls which were laid down and read as it was very important to keep fingers away from the text. They also used a hand held pointer (equivalent to our mouse pointers, "scrolling" also gained a new term, and we can not touch the words likewise) but books were rather compact and eventually would take a toll on the evolution of the human eye. The hebrews on the other hand had to keep a fair distance that could have helped prevent the vision loss, just a thought.
Also everytime before they wrote down the name of God they had to shower, and they couldn't vocalize the name either, they simply nodded instead.

I hate having to wear glasses but I'm glad I can see with them! I don't think I could ever do Lasik surgery. I'm an artist and am afraid of blindness!

I rather see everyone vague than have anyone touch my eyes.

That's a term that once was common but now is just about extinct, eh?

I think I stopped hearing that term back in the late 80s. I guess because so many people need glasses now that it's not a big deal.

I seem to be rather curious as my vision improved with age.

When I learned to drive I needed glasses to drive, as my vision wasn't quite up to the standard required for driving. In the UK it's something like being able to read a regular sized numberplate at 63 feet (because, you know, obviously...) and I could typically read the plate at around 60 feet without glasses. At the required distance I could probably read the plate but might confuse similar looking letters.

In one 8-year period my prescription shifted from -0.5 to -0.25 and about 8 years after that I went with my wife for her eye test and found that I could read all sorts of things far better than was required for driving. I'm not sure what's going on there but I'm not going to complain about it.

This is the first I've seen this thread. I have worn glasses since in my 20s. I thought I looked hideous in them but my husband told me I looked good. So I wore them proudly after that.

You look great, Ruth!! I hate having to wear glasses and both my husband and I would remove our glasses for photos! LOL Now we keep them on because no one would know us without them.
