I noticed a game online called "spent" which is a text based game to help kids see what it is like to try and balance funds when a person is poor. It gives the person a budget and they have to manage it through all sorts of different situations. I thought it might be an eye opener for some kids who don't have many needs especially. I was considering using this game as a conversation starter with some of the kids I see. What do you think?

It's a shame it's only text based since a lot of kids are used to graphics and struggle at reading comprehension in a game. I like the concept of it though because it's important to be able to balance a budget.

Honestly, I knew a lot of adults who were on a very low budget when I did adult mental health services. Particularly those who were getting disability checks. I think the game seemed really realistic in those situations.

I agree that it's great for them to learn.

I grew up poor and my mom would write out the money needed for bills on scraps of paper. We didn't have a lot of money so there wasn't much to go around at all. We had the same bills every month so it was kind of easy for them to figure out.

I went with a client to court to help him get his disability one time. The judge asked me "does this man have any problems managing his money?". I answered "No, the problem is he doesn't have any money to manage."

I always told him if it was easy to survive with no money more people would be doing it

With more people out of work now budgets are crucial and my thread on Wants vs Needs is a topic that some people will have to learn about. The newest iPhone is not a priority.
