When someone in your congregation dies, do you have the funeral service at church? Or at a funeral home?

Members tend to have the service at church (hey, it's FREE... a funeral home may charge north of $1,000.00). Non-members are also welcome to use our chapel for free if our pastor is doing their service, but most don't - they often have some all inclusive plan with the funeral home that includes a service.

At the church. Don't think there has ever been one at the funeral home. Well, except my mother, for some reason we had my mother's at the funeral home and I am not sure why.

Usually at the church but it's up to the family. Sometimes they have a funeral at a different church, and occasionally at a funeral home.

I've seen it done both ways. In the Church or the Funeral home. Either is good. The same people attend. The same Pastor preaches over it.

Personally, I have come to favor only a graveside service. You can still have the pall bearers carry the casket from the hearse to the grave site. The Pastor still preaches. Family can still participate by first throwing some dirt and their flowers on the casket.

And afterwards the family can invite any to come to their home or some place where they have prepared a meal for all to enjoy, reminisce, show pictures, and fellowship. Or they can have it at the grave site also. An outdoor meal, weather permitting. Just like a family reunion. Which is really the flip side of a funeral.

I don't mind having it at the funeral home, but I prefer a true worship service, one that preaches Christ crucified for the forgiveness of sins.
