Fruitcake is a cake made with candied or dried fruit, nuts, and spices, and optionally soaked in spirits. In the United Kingdom, certain rich versions may be iced and decorated. Fruitcakes are typically served in celebration of weddings and Christmas.

Panettone is an Italian sweet bread that is similar to fruit cake. I'm not a fruit cake fan, but I'll eat panettone.

A good rich fruit cake is awesome. The trouble is that so much of what you can buy commercially is made to a budget, like so much else. They aren't as good.

If you've got a home made fruit cake where the fruit has been soaked in brandy for many months and the cake has been allowed to mature for a few months, ideally with extra brandy added to it periodically to soak in, you can have some amazing fruit cakes. It's just that it takes a lot of time and effort to make a good one, so they aren't the kind of thing you can get commercially.
