Can't people be invited to come forward, even if not to a specific altar?
I don't believe that an altar is needed any more than a cross is needed to bring the the reality of Christianity into play.

Revealing Jesus' death on the cross is reality.

Symbolically it is a picture of what occured. It is not the reality of what is actuality which would be in the invisable and heavenly.

At the least Lutherans and Anglicans do, probably also Methodist.

Do Anglicans and Lutherans offer sacrifice at this alter? Altar implies sacrifice.

The sacrifice is us humbling ourself before God. Quit trying to add something that isnt meant, I know you are well versed so you already know this

We offer a sacrifice of praise as the scriptures teach.

I wouldn't specifically say that a cross is required to be present - we can worship God regardless of whether or not a piece of wood is in the room with us.

The thing is that there's a huge difference between a church that doesn't happen to have a cross present, and a church that takes the active step of removing a cross in case it upsets somebody.

Yes, that is it.

Well I have been straying away from the purely 'symbolic' as far as that verse is concerned. Maybe all I need is a cheese sandwich :D
