Favorite Mexican Dishes?

BBQ quesedillas, enchiladas, burritos and tacos for me personally. I also love their breakfast version at a local Mexican brunch chain. I haven't been for a few months as the restaurants, bars and coffee shops are still closed till further notice in my area, which is a a shame, really. What's yours?

When at a restaurant I order enchiladas because I've never really had a bad one and can rely on the meal being good. I've had horrible tacos and burritos so I tend to stay away from them. Tamales are a hit or a miss as well.

Breakfast:
Chilaquiles rojos with eggs with a side of bacon, or sprinkled with pork chorizo and a side of beans. Or eggs a la Mexicana scrambled with cactus and I also love machaca with eggs or also a soup called pozole.

Lunch:
Tacos of chicharrones (deep fried pork belly, cracklings) in a red chili sauce or fried cod tacos with a cabbage slaw and pineapple chunks.

Dinner:
Coctel de camaron, followed by a sopa de fidelo, main course would be arroz con pollo and side of beans. Or mole con pollo and a side of rice. Dessert would be a Mexican bread pudding (capirotada) or flan. I do love tres leches cake.

Late night street food (snack):
Tacos al pastor topped with a pineapple chunk and lime.

I would describe the dish in English, but it’s easier if you google them. All served with only corn tortillas. There are some many different recipes for all of them and also depends on the part of the country you are ordering the food. But I can go on and on... there are so many dishes.

Hey, I've lived my whole life in Southern California so I've grown up on Mexican food! LOVE IT! Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

The only major exception: Menudo. It's a popular Mexican soup, usually served for breakfast. Can't do it. Just can't.


As for fave Mexican restaurants, there are very few chains for this. Where I live, there is a Mom and Pop Mexican restaurant pretty much on every street corner. Most are good, some are excellent. Some specialize in one region of Mexico, some on another. Most have a Tex-Mex and California spin on things, some don't. I always figure I've found a good place when the folks can't speak English very well and I have to crank out my Spanish (which believe me, is no bueno).

I love Menudo but it's very difficult to find in my area and I won't cook it. My dad made the best ever, my mom wouldn't fix it because the prep would stink up the kitchen. But she would eat it after it was cooked.

I went to Houston and was told that the city is known for Tex-Mex food. So I had to have it and it was really good. Everything in huge portions, flour tortillas, tamales made in butcher paper and everything covered in yellow cheese! We have mostly Tex-Mex here, but there are a few close to authentic Mexican and some that specialize in regional dishes. They are small and not as popular as Tex-Mex. You're lucky to live in California, you can probably find any type of Mexican food. Have you tried cabrito, popular in northern Mexico.

Haven't had a lot of authentic Mexican food. As with most things that might be called ethnic food I'd rather try the authentic version than something generic, chain-store, fake-ethnic stuff.

I remember really enjoying a meal at a place somewhere (I forget exactly where, friends drove us to it) in South Carolina that was really good. As far as I could tell the staff there were at least Hispanic if not specifically Mexican.
